Hand-knotted Tibetan wool and silk
This rug is entirely handmade, from the initial hand renderings to the spinning of the yarns to the weaving on the loom, to the detailed finish. Nepaliweavers in a small village outside of Katmandu crafted this rug. The rugs are made using rich Himalayan wool and silk that has been hand spun using natural color pigments by pot dyeing the yarn. It is woven on traditional looms using unique Tibetan knots and once complete are hand-washed and dried. The Tibetan knot, which links every single thread in the complete width of the rug, is never quick and easy, but it suits the Tibetan mentality and desire always to accomplish a solid and honest piece of work. It is the hand spinning which brings out the high lanolin content of the Tibetan wool to produce a yarn which is vibrant and durable, and because every single thread of the spun yarn is of a minutely different thickness the surface of the finished rug has a lively texture which cannot be achieved with the machine-spun wool used in all the other countries of the Orient.Every stage of this ancient craft is carried out by hand without the use of chemicals or industrial machinery.
